Powdery mildew

Using a Vlamingh/Buloke population, we determined that the powdery mildew (causal pathogen: Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei) resistance of Buloke is largely due to the genes Mla7 on chromosome 1H and MlLa on chromosome 2H. For Mla7, we have developed a useful marker that validates well in Australian germplasm. We continue to work to find an equivalent marker for MlLa.

We have also investigated adult plant resistance from two sources (Denar and CLE210) and have attributed both to a region on chromosome 5H. Rebecca Fox presented a poster on these results at the 16th Australian Barley Technical Symposium.
